It was the state of Bosnia where religious differences, stoked ethnic hostilities, and the strive for power of a nationalistic Serbia came together and resulted in a genocide at the Bosnian Muslim population.
The 1990's when it began (causes).
- During the 1990's a number of ethnic started to take place in Yugoslavia among the 6 nations that lived there.
-The Bosnian Genocide started in the year of 1992-1995.
-April 1992, Bosnia was recognized as an independent country by the European community and the United States, but the struggle for Bosnian territorial sovereignty did not end.
-There was three main groups that had fought each other within that country.The three groups were Bosnian Muslims, Serbs, and the Croats.
-The conflict was also violent in the eastern part of Bosnia, near Serbia, between the Serbians and the Bosnians.
-The Serbians opposed the creation of a Bosnian state within their territory and they began to bomb major cities in Bosnia, including Sarajevo and Mostar and also took hold of large areas of Bosnia in order to form a contiguous Serbian territory (Staff T, 1999).
1992
-They began to segregate between Muslims and the Croats in northwest Bosnia.
-They sent Muslims to Concentration Camps
-The most famous camp was called Omarska
-The prisoners were beaten, denied food and water, housed in terrible conditions, were sexually assaulted, tortured to death.
-The Serbians goal was to wipe out the educated.
-April, the 44 month siege of Sarajevo begins
-The morning of July 12, the Serbs segregated the men from the women and children.
-Women and children were sent by bus to to the north, under Bosnian rule.
-Men were taken to a neighborhood building known as the "White House" and were held there.
-By now, over 200,000 Muslim civilians had been murdered.
-More than 20,000 had been missing and feared dead (Spyra, 2010).
1993
-UN sets up 6 "safe zones" in Bosnia
-Several zones fail later that year
-UN sends survival supplies to the residents of surviving safe zones (MHC, 2007)
1994
-NATO intervenes by shooting down four Serbian planes
-Peace talks begin between Bosnia, Serbia, and Croatia (MHC, 2007).
1995
-Sarajevo siege comes to an end
-Serbian Army begins to speed their cleansing process up by capturing Srebrenica and murdering 8,000 people.
- NATO takes over UN peace-keeping in Bosnia and send airstrikes to cripple Serbian forces
-Dayton Peace Accords are signed in November ending the war and setting up peace arrangements for Bosnia and Herzegovina (MHC, 2007).
